  • Printer's Ball 2010: Poem & Poster

    11:25 am on June 30, 2010 | 0 Comments Permalink | Reply

Printer’s Ball is coming up! As a member of CPG – Chicago Printer’s Guild – I have been very fortunate to be involved with Printer’s Ball this year, presented by the Poetry Foundation. You can read more about the event on their website. Each participating printer from CPG was randomly placed with a participating poet/writer. Each poem is reinterpreted by the artist in the broadside format. There are 20 printers/poets participating, which means 20 awesome prints on exhibition at the opening! The poets will also be reading their pieces alongside the posters.

I just finished printing my poster yesterday, so it is fresh off the press. It is 12″ x 18″, in three colors, printed on olive green French paper. There are 53 in the edition, plus a few printed on lighter green stock.

Oh and this wonderful poem is written by Mr. Philip Jenks, thank you!

  • Experiments in screen printing using watercolors

I heard about this really fun process and decided to try it last week!

Whenever I write about an experimental process, I always end up realizing that I am actually very bad at taking process photos. I get carried away working and forget all about using a camera! Unfortunately, I only have photos of the final images, and no documented process to help explain what I’m talking about. So please bear with me.

Basically, I used the screens from the previous screen print I had done (see previous post) and applied watercolor to the exposed areas of the screen… All the four screens were ‘painted in’ using a small paintbrush and watercolors; the nylon mesh of the screen is dense enough that the watercolors will basically sit on top until they dry.

Once the watercolor was dry, I proceeded to print the screens in their consecutive order. The way I approached this was to apply a relatively thick coat of extender base on the painted screen – spreading it on like icing – and leave it to soak for about 5 minutes. After the watercolor had been re-moistened with the base, I printed the image onto the paper underneath. As with regular screen printing, once the first ‘color’ had been printed, the prints were left to dry and the second screen was set up to print, and so on…

With this process, it is only possible to get maybe 2-3 good prints, because the watercolor fades out. I printed five, the last one is barely a whisper of the image. It’s pretty fun to see them all together, from the most saturated to the least.

There are many different ways to approach this technique, for example using only one screen, painting in all the different colors and printing the final image with one pull. Since I had four screens, it took much longer, but the overlapping watercolors do produce a beautiful layering effect that would not be possible working with just one screen.

If I were to do this again, I would definitely work with a less complicated and smaller image, with more room for experimentation. Anyway, here are the photos of the first three watercolor prints, you can see the intensity of the pigments decreasing. As usual, click for larger views.

I drew this image a while ago and decided to screen print it. It’s a four-color screen print on French cover and there are just 17 prints in the edition. The size is 12.5 in. x 18 in. Click for larger view.

the red half-tone is a little more visible in the detail image below, however the scanner wasn’t registering the dots well for some reason, this blurry version is the best I could get out of it.

  • Hairy Jellyfishies!

    8:17 pm on June 10, 2010 | 0 Comments Permalink | Reply

Here are two new screen prints I recently finished.

Bright and colorful and very haaaairy jelly fish! I will be doing a series of colorful creatures, inspired by underwater life and fantasy. I am having a lot of fun exploring printing more with overlapping colors and transparent layers.
There are two versions, a pink jellyfish on cream paper and a dark purple jellyfish on light green paper. Each print is three-colors, screen printed by hand and measuring 9.5 in. x 12.5 in. on 100# French cover. For more information and purchasing, you can view the prints in greater detail at my Etsy store.

  • A quick hello

    Hi at last!
Wow I haven’t been able to update anything online for a while! My computer has been completely down, along with all my files, for over two weeks. We changed out the hard-drive in my good ol’ 2004 iBook. I say ‘we’, but really it was mainly Brook that did it. The original 60 GB hard drive was very carefully replaced with a humongous 250 GB drive, yeppppp…. now I don’t ever have to delete anything. I’ve actually noticed a significant difference in speed, especially with programs such as Photoshop, and it doesn’t hurt that I’ve upgraded the RAM from 512 MB to 1.5 GB. If you can’t afford an entirely new laptop, I stronly recommend swapping out the drives… though with the Mac laptop, it takes almost a whole afternoon and 50+ different screws to take apart and put the whole thing back together with a new hard drive.

Anyway, yeah I’m back! I’ve got three brand new prints, a bunch of drawings, some experiments with printing, etc. to keep me busy posting through the rest of the week, so please check back soon!
