Updates from April, 2010

  • The Seasons by I. Ivanov-Vano and Yuri Norstein

My love for early stop-motion Russian animation is endless. This film is one of my favorites; the images were photographed on glass panes that were slowly shifted to create the illusion of movement in space, along with other techniques. It’s written and directed by Ivan Ivanov-Vano, and co-directed by Yuri Norstein. This is some of the earlier work for Norstein (1969), his later work is really incredible and worth checking out.

Printervention // Printing for the Public

Here are some photos from the Printervention exhibition downtown. The opening was on Friday, April 16th at the The Chicago Tourism Center Gallery, and the show will continue through Version Festival to include lots of workshops, a mobile silkscreen cart, window displays and more.

The Chicago Tourism Center Gallery is located at 72 E Randolph.

Printervention was organized by Emily Clayton, Chris Roberson and Ed Marszewski, and is part of Version Festival 2010, an annual arts festival in Chicago produced by the Public Media Institute that brings together hundreds of artists, musicians and educators from around the world.

  • Poster for Printervention show April 16th

    12:41 pm on April 9, 2010 | 2 Comments Permalink | Reply

This is a 2-color screen print on light green cover stock,12.5 in. x 18.5 in., in an edition of 53. Each artist, of the participating 70+, was asked to donate 25 posters to the Printervention show; these will be distributed in public spaces, part of workshops/demos, given to educators, and exhibited on April 16th at the Chicago Tourism Gallery (yes, come!) The posters are meant to raise awareness of social/political issues of today, in the style/sense of the WPA-era posters of the 1940’s – see the Library of Congress’ WPA Posters Collection for some beautiful poster art from those times.

Also, you can see the Printervention website for more information and a sneak peek at some of the posters & artists. If you click on the image below, it will expand, woooooo….

  • Cover illustration for Newcity

Here is my cover illustration for Newcity, a Chicago weekly paper, that came out yesterday. The illustration is based on the feature story, “The Wagon”, by Martin Preib, as a Chicago cop trying to cope with the physical weight of the dead bodies he encounters, as well as the psychological weight of death on the living.

Click here to go to the Newcity site, where you can read the story. As usual, click the image for a larger view.

And here is a scan of the actual paper once it came out in print:

  • Back from Memphis

Okay so Memphis was faaaantastic! It’s full-on spring there, everything is covered in flowers and birds and pollen! And absolutely everyone says “y’alll” and “folks” and it’s great! I loved the overgrown yards, the porch music, and how people just waved when we walked by. It made me miss Tucson, the general friendliness and more laid-back approach to life. We hardly partook in any of the tourist stuff, we just rode our bikes and walked all day and ate lots of catfish & bbq. We stayed in a really cute neighborhood called Cooper-Young. Graceland was way too expensive to visit and I suppose we really didn’t care all that much, there was plenty of exploring to do by foot.
