  • Art in Print Journal Review

    7:12 pm on July 26, 2012 | 0 Comments Permalink | Reply

The latest issue of Art in Print, a journal focusing history and culture of art and print, featured an article that kindly mentions Struwwelpeter! Written by Courtney R. Thompson, the article covers the recent “Pulled, Pressed, Printed” exhibition at Expo 72 in Chicago. The show included various Chicago printmakers and shops, including Spudnik Press, where I completed Struwwelpeter in 2010 and which had one of the books on display. I’m very honored that Thompson chose to mention the book and feature some of the images as part of her review.

  • The Ascent, part 1

I just finished printing another image yesterday, this is part 1 of a two-part series (though I may not get to the other part until late summer). Took me hours to composite the damn thing from a bunch of off-color scans… I’m beginning to have long, impassioned dreams about large-format scanners at this point. Ha!
    This is a 12.5″ x 19″ five-color screenprint on white French cover.

Thanks everyone for coming out the Struwwelpeter event at Quimby’s!!!

It was so much fun, and I feel truly thankful to be around so many talented and amazing people! I didn’t take any photos so it’s a good thing that Liz at Quimby’s did and posted some on their flickr site.  I stole some and reposted them here, hehe..

    Trunk Show, 2010
10 in. x 10 in. three-color screen print in an edition of 275.

I’ve been meaning to post this for almost a month… This is my piece for TEN x TEN, the collaborative project developed by Spudnik Press Cooperative and Homeroom Chicago.

    A bit about the project:

TEN x TEN develops the creative relationship between bands and printmakers beyond show posters. Visual artists invited a musician or band to join the project by recording an original song. Artists then created a 10″ x 10″ print inspired by the song they commissioned. The final collection features a suite of ten art prints and a ten song compilation of all new tracks.

For this project, I teamed up with the fabulous and very talented Mr. Max Alexander, check out his website to download/listen to some of his stuff! This print was inspired by the track titled ‘Trunk Show’

TEN x TEN artists include: Dee Clements, Kathleen Judge, Angee Lennard, Onsmith, Colin Palombi, Joey Potts, Grant Reynolds, Tom Smith, Sanya Glisic, Sonnenzimmer

Songs by: Locks, The Late Model Races, Strictly Jug Nuts, Sky Event, Netherfriends, Nones, Christine Kick, Blasted Diplomats, Max Alexander, Jason Adasiewicz

All the prints, as well as additional artworks by each artist, are on display at LivingRoom Gallery, 1530 West Superior Street, Chicago IL.
    Exhibition continues January 14 – February 19, 2011

I am SO excited for this event! Quimby’s is an amazing bookstore, one of my favorites in Chicago. I’ve spent hours perusing their comics and totally wonderful & strange books, and attended some really great events. From their website, “Quimby’s is an independently owned bookstore that sells independently-published and small press books, comics, zines and ephemera. We favor the unusual, the aberrant, the saucy and the lowbrow”. If you’ve never been there, you should definitely make the trip and support these guys!

I really hope to see you there!

Check out the fb page for the event by clicking here

  • Ho-Ho-Holiday Card Making Workshop!

    5:17 pm on November 3, 2010 | 0 Comments Permalink | Reply

An upcoming workshop at Spudnik Press, taught by Ness Rago and myself.

Ever wanted to screenprint your own collection of holiday cards from scratch but don’t know where to start? Come learn how in this quick and fun introduction to screenprinting on paper! You’ll enjoy warm treats & cider and walk away with your own handmade greeting cards!

    How it all works:
Students will come with a 1-2 color design that they would like to make into a line of greeting cards. Screens will be pre-coated with photographic emulsion to allow students to focus on perfecting their design, transferring their image to a screen, mixing colors, and finally…. printing! Students are asked to bring 20-40 blank cards to print on, as well as the finished design on a thumb drive or CD (non-digital imagery is also okay). All other materials will be provided.

    Wednesday, December 8th
from 6 – 10 pm at Spudnik Press

with Ness Rago and Sanya Glisic | Price: $40 (15% off for Spudnik Press Members)

Visit http://www.spudnikpress.com to sign up for the workshop!

Some printing progress from the title-page spread I drew last week. This is just the right side, since the left will get printed on a separate sheet. Eventually they’ll meet up. Yay.

    Printing the yellow ink first…

Then the gray color on top (hard to see in the photo but it’s actually gray halftones)

And then the blue ink. I love the green that happened there in the lines, I’ll have to explore that some more in the future… Click for larger views and detail!

Tonight I’ll be printing the last color – dark brown – which contains the title and text on the opposing page. I’ll be posting that in the coming days, stay tuned!

  • The Story of the Inky Boys

Here’s one of the finished spreads! This one happens to be in the center of the signature so the story actually relates to the image. It’s the fourth story in the book, ‘The Story of the Inky Boys’. Just to give you an idea of the dimensions, the sheet is 17.5″ x 11.5″; once folded, the actual pages of the finished book will be close to picture-book size, about 8.75″ x 10.75″.
